Bluing and
Metal
Refinishing |
|
At Midwest Gun Works we offer several
different styles of metal finishing. Let's start with bluing. The
standard salt blue
is a
conventional emersion bluing method in which bluing salts are used in a
high temperature liquid solution to produce the blued finish. The other
method is the Rust Blue. Rust bluing is a much more time
intensive, low temperature process in which the bluing is "applied" to
the metal. Rust or Belgian bluing as some refer to it, is only required
on double guns that feature soft soldered barrels such as the Browning
Superposed, the Winchester 101, 21 & 23, L.C. Smith, Perazzi, Krieghoff,
and Beretta. Our bluing products are used exclusively by Midwest Gun
Works and are not for sale to the general public.

We also offer
two styles of graying. The French Gray and the Nickel Gray. The French
Gray is a non reflective matte or satin finish. The Nickel Gray is
a shinier "Coin" style finish. Do not confuse either of these
finishes with plating. More often than not, both of these finishes
are applied to firearms with very extensive, deep relief engraving
patterns.

Rebuild
/ Tighten
Action
of O/U
&
SxS
Shotgun |
|
The most common
gunsmithing service we perform, and probably the most useful, is the tighten
job. Rebuilding or tightening the action on an Over Under or Side by
Side shotgun is not only something to be considered but will
eventually become necessary. Years of use can cause wear on some of
the internal mechanical parts in the receiver of your shotgun
resulting in what we refer to as a loose condition. Left alone, this
loose condition will eventually result in your shotgun "popping
open". Don't panic!!! This is normal when thousands of rounds have
been put through your shotgun. The good news is, we can fix it!
Refitting the locking bolt and barrel locking lugs, inspecting and
replacing any springs or other parts that are found to be worn and
refitting your forearm bracket are all a part of a rebuild. A handy
tip for for keeping track of the tightness of your action is to
watch the top lever. The top lever position on a new action will be
angled to the right. As the action starts to loosen up, the top
lever will begin creeping to the left eventually moving past center
to the left. This is referred to as "bottoming out". |
