Date & Know Your Browning Gold

The production of the Gold semi-automatic shotgun began in 1993. The Gold 10ga. is the only Gold Gun still in production.

Historic Information Serial Number Info
1993-1997

In 1976 Browning standardized its serial number identification which it followed until 1998. The Gold 10ga. went into production in 1993. This gun is produced in Japan and uses the following serial number configuration until 1998.

  1. Serial Number beginning with 01001 at the start of each year.
  2. Date of Manufacture is a two digit code:
    Z=1, Y=2, X=3, W=4, V=5, T=6, R=7, P=8, N=9, M=0
  3. Gold 10 ga. Type: R91=Gold 10 ga

Gold 10 ga. Serial Number Example:

01001NX191

This would be a Gold 10 ga., manufactured in 1993 with the serial number 01001.
1994-1997

The Gold family of 12 and 20 ga. shotguns was introduced in 1994. They are produced in Belgium and used the following serial number configuration until 1998.

  1. Gold Type:
    F51=Gold 12 ga. Hunter
    FT1= Gold 12 ga. Sporting Clays
    F61=Gold 20 ga. Hunter
  2. Date of Manufacture is a two digit code:
    Z=1, Y=2, X=3, W=4, V=5, T=6, R=7, P=8, N=9, M=0
  3. Serial Number beginning with 01001 at the start of each year.

Gold 12 & 20 ga. Serial Number Example:

F51NW01001

This would be a Gold 12 ga. Hunter, manufactured in 1994 with the serial number 01001.
1998

After mainly 3 1/2 inch shells for waterfowl and ducks. 21 yr. old SX2 started to “stove pipe” and have feed problems with 2-3/4” target loads. Noticeable difference with the new piston. I don’t know enough to understand how the piston works. However the original had two rings and the new one has one. Inspected visually the original piston could not see any visible cracks or breaks that people have reported. The new replacement fit noticeably tighter on the magazine tube. So far great with 2-3/4” 1oz and 1-1/8oz loads.

I replaced a broken piston on a Silver Hunter 12 gauge with this piston. It went in easily and fit perfectly. I'm hoping that this one lasts longer than the original part. So far, so good! Shells eject like they're supposed to now.

More than any other part of my Winchester SX3 shotgun it is the piston assembly that gets gunked up. After a decade of rigorous duck hunting it is almost impossible to get it thoroughly clean and the gun doesn’t cycle as smoothly as it used. The price of this part is worth every penny- by replacing the piston it’s almost like having a new shotgun.

I purchased this hoping it would help my FN SLP run 7 1/2 oz shells. It looks identical to the assembly that came with my 3 year old FN and still won't cycle these shells. Maybe with an older FN this will help with lighter loads but it didn't for me.
