Description: Smith & Wesson J-Frame Hammer, Exposed. Constructed from quality steel, this OEM factory original hammer is manufactured for the J Frame revolvers chambered in .38 Special and .357 Mag. The hammer is responsible for striking the firing pin, causing the live ammunition to be fired. This piece is perfect as a spare the workbench or as an immediate replacement for a lost or damaged part.

I purchased this hammer to replace the bobbed hammer on my 649-5 to provide better purchase for de-cocking, if necessary. It is identical to the original hammer other than the original being bobbed. Great fit. Quick shipping and reasonable price.

In case someone else like myself comes along looking for a hammer for a Chief's Special, the standard J Frame hammer does not work. I was unaware of this but now I know. As the title says, " experience is expensive". From what I could find the Chief's Special has a specific hammer and is no longer in production. What's more is most existing hammers available have been bobbed either intentionally or through damage. So if you're trying to replace one fas stock, good luck.

Wanted to retain the original hammer for my M&P360 and bob this new one. The hammer spur constantly catches on clothing and I only shoot double action. With the cutting, grinding and polishing complete, I installed the new bobbed hammer. The sear will not engage and I lost single action completely.
My point? I wanted DA only but trusted that the SA would still be there. It was gone. End result is that I got what I wanted and have retained the original hammer for future warranty or sale issues. If you require SA/DA, this hammer will need modification. I only needed what I got: DA only.
